Achieve Growth: Online Poker Strategies, Mindset, and Tournament Success

A Chance to Take a New Step Forward

I wasn’t able to win at poker right from the start. In fact, I lost more often than I expected, and there were many times I felt discouraged, thinking, “Wow, this is tougher than I thought.” But one day, I realized something. No matter how difficult the situation may be, if you stack your actions and thoughts one by one, the flow of the game gradually changes. I believe poker, like life, isn’t just about immediate results—it’s about building things up little by little.

The Mistakes I Made and What I Learned

I want to be honest and share some of my bitter failures. There was a time when I sat down at the table brimming with confidence, and right from the start, I became overconfident, thinking “I can handle this,” and ended up repeatedly placing big bets. In the end, I chased the thrill without carefully evaluating my hand (the cards I held) and wound up with a total disaster. I kept losing, and both my wallet and my heart were completely drained.

But from that painful experience, I learned the importance of “properly following the flow of the game”—a basic rule (guidelines for correctly maintaining the flow of play). I also realized that if you aren’t always aware of when to change your strategy, it’s easy to be caught off guard. While I was frustrated by my failure, it became a major turning point for me.

Key Points for Poker Skills to Put into Practice

There are various styles in poker, but I’d like to introduce some skills that I personally tried and found useful.

The important thing is to constantly observe your opponents while looking at your own play objectively

  • Clarify your hand range (which starting hands you’re willing to play): deciding from the beginning which hands to play reduces uncertainty
  • Understand position (the order of action): especially being in a later position is an advantage because you can see how others act before deciding
  • Adjust your bet sizes: rather than going all-in from the start, you can achieve a strong effect by mixing small bets and larger bets

These fundamental strategies (guidelines to manage the flow of the game to your advantage) are very helpful in tournaments (long-format elimination style competitions) as well as online poker (poker played over the internet). In online poker, you can’t see your opponent’s expressions, so the skill of reading numerical data and betting patterns becomes even more important. Of course, it can be confusing at first, but once you get used to it, it becomes easier to establish your rhythm.

Calming Your Mind and Building Up Step by Step

If your mental state is weak, you might get carried away when you’re winning or completely crumble when you’re losing. I went through that myself. However, changing your perspective even slightly can surprisingly lighten your heart.

First, when you lose, don’t let the cause remain unclear. Rather than saying, “It was just bad luck,” reflect specifically with thoughts like, “Maybe my bet size was a bit too big,” or “I might have forced myself when I should have waited.” That way, you can see your own actions and easily come up with your next countermeasure.

Also, when learning poker skills, avoid trying to perfect everything at once. If you try to do too much, your mind will overflow, and if you fail, you’ll feel down all at once.

A Message for You

In my view, poker involves so many elements. Bold attacking strategies, the mental aspect of building perseverance, the fundamental rules that form the basis of the game, the demanding nature of tournament play, and the excitement of competing online—all of these are linked together and lead to your own unique style of play.

So don’t worry about trying to master some amazing strategy all at once. Even if you learn just a bit and try it out, then ask yourself, “How did my play go this time?” you’ll find yourself growing steadily.

I’m still very much in the midst of my own challenges, but I’d love for you to build on each insight and walk your own poker path. If my failure stories can help you, even a little, that alone makes me happy. I truly hope you enjoy learning poker, and that you’ll one day find yourself naturally continuing to win.
